This story is a bit embarrassing for me, but is very relevant to problems that parents are facing today with their children watching television. When I was a kid, my family lived out of town in a rural area. There was no Cable Television service available (there still isn't 25 years later), so one fuzzy channel through over-the-air antenna reception was our only television entertainment. One day I came across a channel I had never seen before, but was completely captivated by. It was The Playboy Channel, and as with any young boy, it instantly became one of my favorites.
Now, I had come across one or two photographs of naked women at school or somewhere else, but I had never seen any video footage of naked women walking, talking, and being in sexual positions. After memorizing the coordinates, I would tune in to The Playboy Channel any time I thought I could watch without my parents finding out. One day while watching it, my Dad, who was supposed to be sleeping, suddenly walked in and discovered me.
His shock and anger was something I had never seen before. Part of his shock and anger was that his son had seen such raw sexual images at a very young age. The other part was he had no idea that type of sexual content was available on television, and that he also had no way of protecting his children from it. My parents never felt comfortable leaving their children alone in front of the television again which was a great annoyance for them.
This adult content on television was a problem for parents 25 years ago, and it is a hundred times more of a problem for today's parents. It doesn't matter whether you have Satelite or Cable service; these adult situations, language, and images are everywhere on television. However, parents today do have a way of protecting their children that my parents didn't. DIRECTV's Parental Controls is a satelite television function that allows parents to lock out entire channels as well as block shows/movies based on its content rating. Just as every movie is given a rating to let parents know if it is appropriate for their kids, every television show is now given a rating such as TVY7, TVPG, or TVMA. You will see them in the program listings/schedule or in the top corner of every show's opening. With DIRECTV, you simply go into the Parental Controls feature of the Menu, select a PIN number (like your bank ATM card), and then choose the type of programs you want blocked according to ratings. The process is very quick and has easy-to-understand on-screen instructions to guide you through it.
Remember, you can also block entire channels you don't feel are appropriate for everyone in the family. When someone goes to that channel or program, they are asked to punch in the PIN number to watch it. If they know the PIN (as parents will) then they can watch it. Set Limits On Viewing Time & Pay-Per-View Purchases
DIRECTV also lets you use this feature to set limited viewing times so children, or even adults, can't sit in front of the TV all day long.
